Impact of Soft Drinks on Children

A soft drink is a beverage that typically contains water, a sweetener and a flavoring ingredient. Most soft drinks contain caffeine, coloring agents and preservatives. Soft drinks are called “soft” because these drinks are soft compared to the hard drinks which are alcoholic drinks. Small amount of alcohol may be present in the soft drinks but if the amount of alcohol is below 0.5 percent then it will be considered as a non-alcoholic drink. Soft drinks can be consumed at room temperature and can also be served chilled.

For children, drinking a soft drink at school or colleges is an easy substitute to satisfy their thirst and gain some energy. However, soft drinks contain several ingredients which can be very harmful to the child’s health. Most of the soft drinks contain more than 40 grams of sugar per serving. Consuming this amount of sweetness can cause undesirable health issues, and parents should always discourage their children to consume sugar-laden drinks.

Consuming soft drinks can have a harmful impact on the dental health of children. Doctors have explained that excessive intake of sugar can spoil the enamel on teeth. Bacteria form a plaque on teeth because they feed off sugar which is present in sugared soft drinks. This can also cause cavities and buildup excessive plaque. If a child does not brush teeth after having a soft drink then cavities can be formed which leads to various dental diseases.

High consumption of sugar can cause hyperactivity within the child. Most of the parents have observed a difference in the behavior of their child after they consume a large amount of sugar. It varies from person to person and some kids are affected more than others. Soft drinks cause a fluctuation of glucose level in a child’s body which is directly connected to hyperactivity. The processed sugar which is present in soft drinks enters the bloodstream rapidly. The high level of sugar causes a surge in the activity level of the child.

Soft drinks are available everywhere, even in schools. Children should try to avoid carbonated drinks which contain a large amount of caffeine and sugar. Milk is a better alternative to soft drinks as it provides nutrition to the body to help it grow properly. Even water is a great alternative for carbonated drinks. Parents must educate their children about the harmful effects of soft drinks and teach them to make healthier choices.
